Early life and education[edit]

Araki was born in Tokyo on May 25, 1940.[4] He studied film and photography at Chiba University from 1959, receiving a degree in 1963.[4] He then went to work at the advertising agency Dentsu, where in 1968 he met his future wife, the essayist Yōko Aoki [Wikidata].[4]

Art career[edit]

Araki is considered to be one of the most prolific artists alive or dead in Japan.[1][5][6] Many of his photographs are erotic; his work has been said to exist on a line between art and pornography.[7] Among his photography books are Sentimental Journey (1971), and Tokyo Lucky Hole (1990). Sentimental Journey '1972–1992' is a diary of life with his wife Yōko until she died of ovarian cancer in 1990. The first part of Sentimental Journey sees the couple embarking on married life – their honeymoon and having sex.[8] Pictures taken during her last days were published in Winter Journey. Parr and Badger include four of Araki's books in the first volume of their photobook history:[9]Zerokkusu Shashincho 24 (Xeroxed Photo Album), Senchimentaru na Tabi (Sentimental Journey), Tokyo Lucky Hole and Shokuji (The Banquet).

He contributed photography to the Sunrise anime series Brain Powerd.

In 1981, Araki directed High School Girl Fake Diary (女高生偽日記Jokōsei nise nikki), a roman porno film for the studio Nikkatsu.[10] The film proved to be a disappointment both to Araki's fans, and to fans of the pink film genre.[11]

The Icelandic musician Björk is an admirer of Araki's work, and served as one of his models.[2][12] At her request he photographed the cover and inner sleeve pages of her 1997 remix album, Telegram. More recently, he has photographed pop singer Lady Gaga.[12]

In 2005, an American director, Travis Klose, recorded a documentary about Araki called Arakimentari, which discusses his personal lifestyles and his arts.

Araki was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008, and has since undergone surgery which successfully removed the tumor.[13]

In 2010, Araki's cat, Chiro, died of old age.[14]

In October 2013, Araki lost the vision in his right eye due to a retinal artery obstruction. The 74-year-old man used this as an inspiration to exhibit his works, called Love on the left eye, held on 21 June 2014 at Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo.[15]

Commissioned by Italian luxury label Bottega Veneta, Araki photographed Saskia de Brauw and Sung Jin Park in Tokyo for the brand's spring/summer 2015 campaign.[16]

Controversy[edit]

Araki is known for his intimate access to models. When he was asked about this in 2011, he bragged that he gained that through sex.[17]

In April 2018, Kaori, a model who posed for Araki from 2001 to 2016, made a blog post about her relationship with him.[18] In the blog post, she accused him of financial and artistic exploitation.[19] Kaori stated that 'she worked without a contract, was forced to take part in explicit shoots in front of strangers, was not regularly paid and that her nude images were often used without her consent.'[19] In 2017, when being requested to stop republishing or exhibiting some photographs of her, Araki wrote to Kaori, warning that she had no rights.[18] The entire experience led her to considerable trauma and ill health.[19] Kaori stated that the Me Too movement had encouraged her to speak out.[18] The accusations have raised questions about the power dynamics between a photographer and his subject.[18] In December 2018, the activist group Angry Asian Girls Association protested the opening of an exhibition of photographs by Araki at C/O Berlin to raise awareness for Kaori's claims.[20]

  1. ^The number depends on such things as how new compilations of previously published are counted. But as of 2005 Kōtarō Iizawa counted 357 in Araki-bon! 1970–2005 (荒木本! 1970–2005) / A Book of Araki Books! 1970–2005 (Tokyo: Bijutsu Shuppansha, 2006; ISBN4-568-12071-3). Tokyo 'entertainment centers' in the early 1980s photographed by Araki
It started in 1978 with an ordinary coffee shop near Kyoto whose waitresses famously wore no panties under their miniskirts and see-through pantyhose. As word began to spread, similar establishments popped up across the country. Men lined up outside these cafés waiting to pay three times the usual cost

I reviewed this book in another edition before. For whatever reason I gave the old edition four stars and this one five stars. Why? Sex is a mood thing with me. And Araki sometimes strikes my fancy and other times not. But what's important is not the sex, but the way he captures an aesthetic in sexual affairs.
He is also a great documentarian with respect to Tokyo bar/sex life. The pictures of his wife, often erotic, is heartbreaking to me, because I know she passed away from cancer. So the way A

Well, not exactly reading..(but even the short chapters/foreword written by Akihito Yasumi and Akira Suei gave me a good insight and put those photographs of Araki into context that changed those little pieces into one story.

“Without obscenity, our cities are dreary places and our life is bleak.”
—Nobuyoshi Araki
Araki is an interesting one for me. Never one to shy away from controversy, the objects of his photographs range from a small, furry feline to a female sprawled out in a most amorous pose, and all are irrevocably beautiful. The dynamic between his tones is indicative of Araki’s fascination with Eros/Thanatos and is present throughout his narratives, which makes for truly fascinating photography. I’ve been a f

More of a photographic chronicling of an era than an actual book, this doesn’t detract from the education and entertainment offered in this mammoth collection. Varying in degree of smut and vulgarity, there’s a candid quality to a lot of these snaps that is more telling than any first hand account from an owner or dancer. On one page you’ll see a dimly lit street being cut through by a sedan, and on the very next you’ll see a woman baring all that she has, a curious finger walking through the pu..more

One moment totally erotic, the next disturbed, and then a pretty picture of a kitty cat, and then a street in Tokyo. Araki is an amazing photographer - and I think he may be also a very interesting man. I have seen photographs that he took of his wife that is both erotic and longing - and eventually she passed away from cancer. Which is heartbreaking -especially through his work. It's almost the erotic impulse is what keeps him going - plus the occasional kitty cat as well.

Really a chronicle of a by gone time. Photographed with his usual flair and style. Its a big old book of great B&W images covering the gambit of all sorts of Kinks. Good Stuff. well executed all around and since its a Teschen its super cheap in paperback!
Over the course of his advanced years, Araki must have often reminisced about how good the life he had in his younger days. I so admire his ability to humour and party.
I think, at face value, it's a great concept, documenting Kabukicho, uncensored in all its glory. But, personal thoughts on sex work and potential power imbalances aside, the idea gets really old, really fast? I respect Araki's body of work but Tokyo Lucky Hole is just.. well, it's messy, and all those bodies stacked page after page just becomes desensitising
this is a wonderful book. I want to increase my knowledge so..
