Nintendo's stance on emulation has always been a rigid one. As far as the company is concerned, if you're downloading and playing games from unofficial sources, you're a software pirate.

'It's that simple and not open to debate,' says its corporate FAQ.

And yet, here's a thing. If you download the Wii version of Super Mario Bros. using the Virtual Console, there's evidence to suggest Nintendo might have actually repurposed an illegally-copied ROM and then sold it back to us. Surely that can't be the case. Right?

That's episode three! A little different this time, as we're talking business practice rather than game design - I'm interested to see what you make of it.

Anyway, I like the idea of using this space on the site to add a little extra context for those who want it, as we did with last week's piece on the many lead designers of Civilization. And with the .NES header being such a crucial piece in this story, I thought I'd talk through how exactly we managed to verify its existence in our digital copy of Super Mario Bros.

Although the Nintendo Wii allows you to transfer files, including games, to an external storage device, it ensures the device is formatted in a way that makes it very difficult to read on anything other than a Nintendo console. As a result, we needed to use a modified “homebrewed” Wii that would be able to copy those same files while avoiding the formatting process itself.

Here's what that leaves you with.

As you can see, we were mostly looking at .app files here and so needed to use a hex editor to have a nosy around in the binary data. We already knew from Frank Cifaldi's GDC talk that a .NES header should be located in '00000001.app' and so that's where we started. A quick search of the file (CTRL+F 'NES') and we found it.

The .NES header, originally created by Marat Fayzullin for his iNES emulator, is used to provide emulators with the necessary context needed to recreate a hardware setup that changed with each and every cartridge. Finding it in this Nintendo-published version of Super Mario Bros. felt like a sign we were heading in the right direction.

At this point I contacted Fayzullin himself, providing him with the files we'd obtained. He then compared this with various pirated Super Mario Bro. ROMs found online and discovered the ROM content was identical.

'There are minute differences between ROM dumps,' explained Fayzullin. 'Depending on the cartridge version and how it has been dumped. If you see that your .NES file DOES NOT match any of the ones found online, it is likely to be their own ROM dump. I have cut the ROM content out of the Wii file you sent me and it indeed matches the .NES file found online.'

As you hopefully saw in the video, we asked Nintendo for comment on this story, and although it denied using ROMs downloaded from the internet, it decided against explaining these peculiarities.

After saving the Mushroom Kingdom, brothers Mario and Luigi agree to take a vacation to a place called Dinosaur Land, where there are many types of dinosaurs. While resting in the beach, however, Princess Peach disappears. When Mario and Luigi wake up they try to find her and, after hours of searching, come across a giant egg in the forest. It suddenly hatches and out of it comes a young dinosaur named Yoshi, who then tells them that his dinosaur friends have also been imprisoned in eggs by evil turtles. Mario and Luigi soon realize that it must be the evil King Koopa Bowser and his Koopalings.
Mario, Luigi and Yoshi set out to save Princess Toadstool and Yoshi's dinosaur friends, exploring Dinosaur Land for Bowser and his Koopalings. To aid him, Yoshi gives Mario a cape as they begin their journey. Mario and Luigi continue to follow Bowser defeating the koopalings in the process and save all of Yoshi's dinosaur friends. They eventually make it to Bowser's castle, where they fight him in a final battle. They defeat Bowser and save the Princess, restoring peace to Dinosaur Land.

Super Mario World is one of my favorite Mario games of all time. My others are Super Mario Bros. (1985), Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988), Super Mario 64 (1996), Super Mario RPG (1996), Luigi's Mansion (2001), New Super Mario Bros. (2006), and Super Mario Galaxy (2007) (haven't tried any Wii U Mario games). Its like Super Mario Bros. 3 but better graphics and on the next gen system (NES to SNES) and if you have played Super Mario Bros. 3 then you have played Super Mario World just that you can save and better graphics. So I give this game a 10 out of 10! (but can only rate to 5 so 5 out of 5!)

As a kid, this was a game I couldn't stop playing non-stop. I would literally play this game for hours because it was that fun. You play as Mario or Luigi and travel through Dinosaur Island as you try to rescue Peach from Bowser. You'll also stumble upon the island natives called Yoshi's, which you can ride around on. Super Mario World has classic power ups, including a new cape one. There is a lot of levels in this game leaving for a lot of exploring to be done, meaning it's not enough to beat the game for a 100%. I can't think of a better SNES game. This is among the best with the Country series, Zelda: Link to the Past and Super Mario RPG.

'Super Mario World' is the best Mario game in existence. With its many secrets, cool new power up, and the addition of Yoshi the was little room for improvement. When 'New Super Mario Bros. Wii' came out promising a retro experience I was sad to find it was nothing more than a selling point. if you thought 'New Super Mario Bros. Wii' was good you'll love this game.

Super Mario World. The game that came along with the SNES when it the console was launched. It, for some, is a very good game and, for others, a really well made Mario game. This game introduced one of the most crucial characters in the Mario series. The dinosaur, Yoshi! It also introduced the Cape Feather, which, when grabbed, allows the player to have a cape and fly in levels. Sadly, it isn't in any other games yet. Super Mario World is one of those games you cannot miss out on playing. Many people love it, so you probably will too.
