Good day,

Hi:
If you post the device details string of characters for the missing ethernet controller, we probably can find the drivers for it.
If you are using XP, click on the missing ethernet controller device in the device manager. Then click on device details.
Post the string of characters you see.

Hi,
I guess we need to run a Hardware Check on the PC to find the Ethernet Controller shipped with the PC.
Download and run the following tool on your PC (Download it onto a PC you have Ethernet connection, save it to External Storage Media, share it on Compaq PC, and run it to install)
Launch the installed application, go to Network Category, find the Adapter Name as shown in the Image below.
Let us know the Adapter name, we will work together to find a Compatible Driver.
Good Luck,

I hope this would be enough?]

That's a secret!
Only kidding.
When you posted the device details Id string, I looked it up here:
You enter the vendor Id (8086) in the vendor search box.
You enter the device ID (1039) in the device search box.
When you do this, the only device in the list that shows up, that has a vendor id of 8086 and a device of 1039 is this one:
0x1039 LAN Controller with 82562ET/EZ PHY 0x8086Intel Corporation
I then searched HP's support sites for LAN controller with 82562ET/EZ and came up empty.
Since I knew it was an intel network controller I did a search on Intel's site and came up empty.
So, I made my search less specific and did a search on 82562 on Intel's download site and got lucky.
I recommend you keep that driver in a safe place and label it accordingly for future use in case you need it again.

I am in the same situation.
Reloaded XP Home OS on my HP Pavilion a1100y desktop and now cannot go on line because of missing ethernet driver. Have been searching for about a week, trying to find the driver and when I signed up for this forum I found this dialogue.
See Subject line for ID. I could not get the long ID to paste in this note here.
Thxs much for anybody who can give me the link to the driver I need.

Hi:
This should be the network adapter driver you need for XP Home:
Download and install the first one (32 bit):
Paul
- Open Menu
Didn't find what you were looking for? Ask the community
You almost have it.
With the information from Device Manager you can determine the VENdor and DEVice information:
Network Controller (DeviceNTPNP_PCI0019)
PCIVEN_8086&DEV_0084&SUBSYS_13158086&REV_00
PCIVEN_8086&DEV_0084&SUBSYS_13158086
PCIVEN_8086&DEV_0084&CC_028000
PCIVEN_8086&DEV_0084&CC_0280
If you were to hop out to:
and from what you see in Device Manager enter your VENdor and DEVice information from the network Controller, then click Search:
You can see that that device is most likely an Intel wireless device:
This jives with what HP says about your system:
So your wireless component is an Intel part and Intel has a drivers download page that has a driver update utility you can download (perhaps to your desktop) and let it analyze your system and see if it suggests a driver for you:
It is generally not a good idea to use Windows Update for any hardware device drivers (video, audio, network) because Microsoft does not know what the best drivers are for your system. Always get hardware device drivers from the manufacturers WWW site if possible (if you want your system to work properly).
If you ever see any hardware driver updates offered by Windows update I would decline them, then hide them so you don't accidentally install the wrong drivers.
Ourlink wireless usb adapter driver download for windows 7. Here you can see where I have chosen not to install and then hidden Windows Updates for an NVIDIA video card since I know they are probably not right and I know I should only get NVIDIA drivers right from the NVIDIA WWW site.
Asus Ethernet Controller Driver
Here you can see the updates that were offered but I did not install them and hid them do I don't see them again:
